SEO in Copenhagen

I am based in the Copenhagen area and work with local businesses as well as clients across the country. The practical benefit of being nearby is not the SEO itself — it is being able to meet when something needs deciding.

SEO in Copenhagen

Local search

If you have a physical address customers visit, there is a different kind of work to do: the Google business profile, consistent address details across the places they appear, and reviews that do not sit still.

It is not glamorous, but for a shop or a clinic in Copenhagen it is often what moves the needle most, and it is rarely finished.

On hiring freelance over an agency

An agency makes sense when a lot of content needs producing and ads running at the same time. There is a machine and it scales.

A freelancer makes sense when the problem is technical, when the budget should go to work rather than coordination, or when you need someone who can say no to a bad idea without checking with an account manager first.

Deliverables

What you get

Concrete deliverables, not a report of recommendations someone else has to find time for.

  • Google Business Profile

Filled out properly, with categories that actually match, and photos that are not from 2019.

  • Consistent details

Name, address and phone identical across the places they appear. Disagreement here costs more than people expect.

  • Local landing pages

Where it makes sense — and only there. Thirty near-identical city pages are a risk, not a strategy.

  • Reviews in motion

A way of asking for them that does not feel pushy and does not stall after three weeks.

Process

How it works

Four steps. You know what happens when, and you can stop after any of them.

  1. 01

    Find what blocks you

I start with a full crawl and a review of Search Console. There is nearly always something technical in the way that makes the rest of the work wasted if it is not cleared first.

  2. 02

    A prioritised list

Everything I find gets sorted by return on effort. You can see the reasoning behind each item, so you can judge for yourself whether I am right.

  3. 03

    The fixes get made

I deliver the work as pull requests in your own repository, not as recommendations someone else has to find time for. That is the whole reason to hire a developer for SEO.

  4. 04

    Measurement and follow-up

We measure before and after on real visitors. You get a short monthly update, including the months where nothing happened, because that is information too.

Who does the work

I am the person you will be working with

My name is Mikkel and I have been building for the web since 2010. There is no project manager in between, and you will not get a junior on the job because the senior was busy. What you agree is what gets built, and I am the one building it.

Day to day I am a partner at Bigum&Co, and I have worked on more than 400 projects across ecommerce, pharma, construction and the public sector. Call or write — I usually reply the same day, and I will say straight away if the job is not a fit.

In depth

SEO in Copenhagen

What local SEO is actually about

If you have an address customers visit, there is a different kind of work to do than ordinary SEO. Google treats local searches separately, and the map pack at the top follows different rules than the blue links below.

Three things decide most of it. Proximity to the searcher, which you cannot do anything about. Relevance, which is about how well the business profile and the site match what is being searched. And prominence, a mix of reviews, mentions and how consistent your details are across the web.

The last two can be worked on, and they are rarely finished. The business profile sits half filled in with a wrong category, the opening hours are wrong on public holidays, and there are nine reviews from 2021. It is not hard to fix, it just never got done.

For a shop, a clinic or a trades business in Copenhagen that is often where the most sits — more than in technical SEO on the site itself.

On city pages and when they are a bad idea

There is a widespread approach of making one page per city: SEO in Copenhagen, SEO in Aarhus, SEO in Odense, and on down the postcode list. The text is the same, only the city name changes.

It used to work. Today it is at best a waste of time and at worst actively harmful, because it looks exactly like what it is: thirty near-identical pages with no real content. Google has become good at recognising the pattern.

There is a version that makes sense. If you genuinely have a presence in the city, genuinely have done work there, and genuinely can write something about that market that does not apply everywhere else — then there is a page worth making. If you do not, there is not.

I have one such page myself, the one you are reading. It exists because I actually am based in the Copenhagen area and actually do drive to meetings here. I do not have a page about SEO in Aalborg, and there is a reason for that.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will you come to us?
Yes, anywhere in greater Copenhagen without fuss. Further away we agree on it, but most things work over video and then the time goes to the work instead.
Do you only work with Copenhagen businesses?
No. About half my clients are elsewhere in the country and a couple are abroad. It makes no practical difference.
Can you help with reviews?
With getting them moving, yes — a way of asking that fits into the contact you already have with customers. I do not write them and I do not buy them.
We have no shop. Is local SEO relevant then?
Less so. With no physical address customers visit, the map pack is not your fight, and ordinary SEO applies. That said, people still add a city name when searching for consultants, and that can be worked with.
Will you come to us?
Yes, anywhere in greater Copenhagen without fuss. Further away we agree on it, but most things work over video and then the time goes to the work instead.
